Significance of Sankashti Chaturthi ~ Sankashtahara Chavithi

Chaviti is the favorite day of the month for Lord Ganesh. Hindu calendar has two Chaturthi tithis in each lunar month. Fourth day after new moon and full moon observed as Chavithi tithi in hindu lunar calendar. The one after full moon or Poornima during Krishna (Bahula) paksha or fourth day of Waning phase of moon is known as Sankashti Chaturthi or Sankata hara Chavithi or Sankata vimochana Chaturthi. Another one is after New moon or Amavasya during Shukla paksha in Bhadrapad month known as Vinayaka Chavithi /Ganesh Chaturthi. If Sankata Chaturthi falls on Tuesday it is known as Angarika Chaturthi. This is the monthly ritual dedicated to worship of Lord Ganesha.

Sankashti means trouble some time. Observing Chaviti day fast from sunrise to moonrise and worship Ganesh pooja on this day can reduce problems or vignas as the lord Vinayaka symbolizes for intelligence and remover of all obstacles. Sankata hara Chaviti fasting can bring prosperity, happiness and bliss into one's life. Sankashta Chaturti fasting depends on moonrise and it might differ for two cities. In Bhavishya Purana and Narasimha purana mentioned about this Chaturthi vrat.

Jupiter Combustion ~ Guru Moudyami in 2013

As per the Panchang Ganitha a planet loses its brightness and power when it near to the Sun. This state is called combustion or Moodami or Moudyami. The combustion occurs on the appropriate degrees distance of the planet. When it comes to Jupiter and Venus combustion (Astangata) as beneficial planets, their positive effects will be reduced somewhat.

That’s why Moudyami or Lop is an inauspicious period to perform auspicious (Shubhakarya) functions or events. 11 degrees or lesser distance between the Sun and Jupiter is considered for the combustion of the planet Jupiter (Guru Moodami).

In 2013 Guru Moodami occured on Sri Vijaya Samvatsara Vaishaka Bahula Dwadasi Tuesday dated 4th June in west direction while Jupiter in 3rd pada of Mrigasira star. It going to be end on Jyeshta Bahula Dwadasi Thursday dated 4th July in East direction while Jupiter in 1st pada of Ardra star. So in this moudya period is not at all auspicious to perform any ceremonies like Wedding, New constructions, Engagements etc. But new plans, talks, proposals can be done in this period.

Is Jupiter become a functional benefic or malefic ?

According to vedic astrology all planets have inherent nature and functional nature. They behave as benefics and malefics based on the lordship of houses which they own. Naturally the lordship would vary from one lagna to other. Like wise Jupiter also works as benefic and malefic depending upon the lordship. In Mythology Jupiter is the teacher of all gods, that' why he known as Brihaspati or Deva Guru.

Jupiter is the most benefic and believed to be the auspicious planet in vedic astrology. Jupiter gives Justice, Wisdom, Luck, Knowledge, Prosperity, Respect, Wealth, Authority, Children, Intellectuality, Kindness, Spirituality  and Happiness.  Jupiter's good placement and strength is very important in a chart to have beneficial aspects of life. Though Jupiter is a beneficial planet, if he becomes the lord of malefic houses in the natal chart, then how does he act, as a benefic or malefic ?

As per the Parashara's Principles Jupiter is benefic as lord of Aries, Cancer, Scorpio Ascendants. Neutral as lord of Leo, Sagittarius, Pisces lagnas and malefic for Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra and Capricorn Ascendants. But there was an sloka in Uttara kalamrita which is against to the basic principle of lordship.  The sloka contains Jupiter lordship also.

The summery of the sloka is:

Jupiter as lord of 3 and 12 is a yoga karaka producing benefic results.
Jupiter as lord of eighth or in the eighth is equally beneificial.

As per the sloka the first point applies to Capricorn Ascendant and the second one to Taurus and Leo Ascendants. Let us assume that the 8th, 12th signs signify as the Moksha bhavas. Jupiter perceived as the teacher and he signifies spirituality, soul-growth. As the 8th and 12th lord he expands the spiritualism of  the natives. But Jupiter placement in the 8th house is difficult to agree that he gives benefical results unless it be his own sign.  Jupiter placement, conjunctions and aspects with certain yoga forming planets  also consider for the beneficial results. If those yogas are strong, the benefic results produce in their planetary periods.

However before going to Jupiter benefic results for the Capricorn, Taurus and Leo ascendants, Jupiter placement and other yogas which is related to 3rd, 8th and 12th houses should be consider.
