Significance of Sankashti Chaturthi ~ Sankashtahara Chavithi

Chaviti is the favorite day of the month for Lord Ganesh. Hindu calendar has two Chaturthi tithis in each lunar month. Fourth day after new moon and full moon observed as Chavithi tithi in hindu lunar calendar. The one after full moon or Poornima during Krishna (Bahula) paksha or fourth day of Waning phase of moon is known as Sankashti Chaturthi or Sankata hara Chavithi or Sankata vimochana Chaturthi. Another one is after New moon or Amavasya during Shukla paksha in Bhadrapad month known as Vinayaka Chavithi /Ganesh Chaturthi. If Sankata Chaturthi falls on Tuesday it is known as Angarika Chaturthi. This is the monthly ritual dedicated to worship of Lord Ganesha.

Sankashti means trouble some time. Observing Chaviti day fast from sunrise to moonrise and worship Ganesh pooja on this day can reduce problems or vignas as the lord Vinayaka symbolizes for intelligence and remover of all obstacles. Sankata hara Chaviti fasting can bring prosperity, happiness and bliss into one's life. Sankashta Chaturti fasting depends on moonrise and it might differ for two cities. In Bhavishya Purana and Narasimha purana mentioned about this Chaturthi vrat.
